This 1954 Kaiser Darrin sports car Model 161 was the brainchild of Howard Darrin and was announced as early as 1952. The prototypes were shown in February of 1953 mainly for testing and exhibition. It was released to the public January 6, 1954. Less than 500 were produced at the Kaiser's Jackson Michigan factory. Low production number may have been due Kaiser's merger with Willy's.
The Darrin was built on a 100 inch chassis. Features included power brakes, power steering, air conditioning, radio, heater, white side wall tires, tinted glass, leather upholstery and wire wheels.
The Kaiser Darrin was equipped with a 161 cubic inch inline six cylinder engine that developed 90 horsepower. A three speed standard transmission was standard. Overdrive and an automatic transmission was available at a additional cost of $125.00.
